Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

The easiest action a leader can take when a team member isn’t performing well is to just let them go. But that can be a big mistake, especially when you have a high performer who has been going through a slump.
My guests on this edition of Quick Hits — Brandon Mahoney, co-founder of the start-up Launch Point Labs; Jim Tam, head of the Dallas office for Keystone Partners; and Coach MJ Tolan, entrepreneur and host of the “I’m Possible” podcast — all have extensive experience both as high performers and team leaders. They believe the best action to take is to ask questions and listen with empathy.
Maybe that person is just going through some personal issues. Maybe there’s a problem with how the team is organized that has kept them from feeling fully satisfied. Maybe their interests have moved on and would better suit the team in a different way.
Having that conversation will not only maintain goodwill within your organization, it might expose weak points to which you had been blind and allow a chance for everyone to improve. The best leaders know how to listen to their high performers and respond with creativity and empathy.
What would you do if someone on your team suddenly stop performing well?

How much of business success is about patience?
Monday Nov 28, 2022
Monday Nov 28, 2022
Very rarely is does an "overnight" success actually happen that quickly. It is more common to hear someone say it took ten years of work to become an "overnight" success.
We've talked on Quick Hits before about how do you know when you should quit, pivot or do something different.
Today I wanted to talk about just sticking with it. Seeing it through to the bitter end (whatever that means in business).
All three of my panelists have experience in trials and tribulations that come with business ownership and know the feeling of wanting it NOW while being willing to do the things and allow the time it takes for something to grow.
Stewart Wiggins, Yonason Goldson and Emily Rentas shared some poignant thoughts about patience with yourself and the process is important but too much patience can lead to complacency and stagnation.
What do you think? How much of business success is about being willing to be patient?

How do you deal with feeling foolish?
Friday Nov 25, 2022
Friday Nov 25, 2022
Just as I am posting this I am wondering about the difference between feeling foolish and feeling shame. That is a different conversation.
I was particularly interested in this topic because I was feeling foolish about something I had done the week before (I share it in the video).
I know from talking to lots of people that I'm not the only person to deal with feelings of foolishness that keep coming back every time certain memories resurface.
Gudjon Bergmann shared an example of someone actively trying (and succeeding) to make him feel foolish.
Dr. Rhonda Bompensa-Zimmerman made a really good point about how feeling foolish is related to judging ourselves as somehow inadequate.
While Sara Oblak Speicher noted that sometimes the willingness to be foolish is what brings zest to life.
What do you think? How do you deal with feeling foolish?

How did you unlearn something your parents believed but you now don’t?
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
We start our lives learning what is true about the world from our parents. Some good. Some bad. Some true. Some not.
I recently saw a video where two parents "pranked" their toddler by leaving the house and "forgetting" her.
They left a camera set up to film her (to me) heartbreaking reaction as she stood looking at the closed door holding her little suitcase.
In her unconscious mind that child now has data that says she isn't important and doesn't matter enough to be remembered.
How will she unlearn that? (Don't do that to your children. It's not funny.)
In this conversation Jim Tam, Racquelle Pakutz, Jonathan Gaev and I talked about religion. That seems to be an area where it is pretty common for adults to differ from their parents.
But how does that change come about? Could we use the same steps to unlearn deep-seated beliefs that might have been installed by our parents being careless?
Where do your beliefs differ from your parents and how did you get where you are now?

What does it mean for life to ”have meaning?”
Tuesday Nov 22, 2022
Tuesday Nov 22, 2022
This might be the most abstract question I've ever asked on Quick Hits.
There is something about living a meaningful life that should be decided after you've finished living it.
But life having meaning feels more like a real time, right now, as we are living it thing.
I wondered if maybe I'd jumped the philosophical shark but Philip Tate, APR, Fellow PRSA, Alexi Bracey and Tim Hawkes were game to have this esoteric conversation with me.
What do you think? What does it mean for life to have meaning and how do you know if yours does?

Do you schedule time to learn/grow and if so, what do you do with that time?
Monday Nov 21, 2022
Monday Nov 21, 2022
You hear "experts" say that they schedule time for personal development. But do real people actually put time in the calendars to read, study or otherwise engage with their area of expertise?
When I asked Christopher Jerjian and Michael Davis this question, both of them told me they read. Not fiction or for fun. Work related stuff.
Michael has created a habit of reading for 15 minutes a day every day at lunch.
I thought about that after our conversation and I wondered if 15 minutes would be enough for me to feel like I had accomplished anything.
But then I thought about the e-newsletters I read and realized I could likely read two or three in a 15-minute window.
Other options that came up were watching videos (you can learn to do almost anything using YouTube these days) and taking courses with other experts in the same field as you.
Do you schedule time to learn and grow your brain or do you let it happen as it fits in?

Where is the line between going the extra mile and working for free?
Friday Nov 18, 2022
Friday Nov 18, 2022
Simon Coles made the point that maybe it depends on whether you are working extra at your discretion or if the company expects you to clock out and continue working.
Rhonda Bompensa-Zimmerman had a manager expressly telling her NOT to work off the clock.
I didn't get to share during the conversation that I had the opposite experience. I had a boss in my early 20's who didn't want to me get overtime and also didn't want me to leave until the work was done.
Stewart Wiggins said early in the conversation that there really is no black and white answer and I agree. It is complicated.
If #quietquitting is doing only what is expected of you and what you are paid to do, but no more - why is that a problem?
What do you think? Where do you draw the line between being a go-getter and your free labor lining the pockets of the company?

What makes something a fact?
Wednesday Nov 16, 2022
Wednesday Nov 16, 2022
This is a question that has been traipsing around in my brain since WAY before people in politics started talking about facts and alternate facts.
If gravity is still just a theory (something for which we have not found evidence against), what are facts?
The joke I tell when I do talks and trainings about communication and conflict resolution goes like this:
What is the difference between perception and reality? (wait a beat)
Perception is what you think. Reality is what I think (heavy emphasis in the I).
It always gets a good chuckle.
But if facts are all just perception, how do we figure it out?
Gary Fredericks, Racquelle Pakutz and Kevin Wash were brave souls to step into this conversation with me.
What do you think makes something a fact?

Why do so many people tolerate being unhappy at work?
Tuesday Nov 15, 2022
Tuesday Nov 15, 2022
Golden handcuffs. Too exhausted to look for something different. The belief that the next job could be worse. Feeling like the job market is so bad they will never find another job.
When I worked in corporate, I stayed in jobs because they were just that, jobs. I never believed they were a career. I just wanted to pay my bills.
As challenging and unfair as some of my bosses were, I was never really that miserable.
But I know people who are. They dread going to work every day; in the extreme to the point of feeling sick.
I wondered what might cause people to choose to stay in a job like that so I asked Sarah Sears, Frank Galindo and Jim Tam for their thoughts.
Have you ever stayed in a job you hated? Why did you stay? If you are in a job you hate now and would rather PM me your story, feel welcome to do so.

I’ve been guilty of it; just unloading, usually on a stranger, with WAY too much personal detail. Of course, then I felt super awkward about it.
I’ve been on the other side too. Although I do my best to not cause the other person to feel awkward. Particularly if I’m sitting in public with a sign that says #Happy2Listen.
What if it’s not a stranger you’ll never see again? When someone regularly shares more information than you need or want to know, what do you do about it?
Dave Roberts and Enrique Acosta Gonzalez joined me for this interesting conversation about a regular part of the human condition.
Have you ever overshared with someone you see regularly? Was it weird afterwards?
