Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

In my family (eight kids) all of us have some level of dyslexia. Standardized tests are hard. Some of us fought our way through college. Others are succeeding in the trades.
But all of us have been misjudged as not being bright, put in the "slow" class and overlooked. In talking to Chris Cloud we both wondered if there was a better way to decide who would be good at a specific job.
Francisco "Frank" Galindo, MBA and Paula Jenkins, MBA joined us for this conversation that doesn't have an easy answer.
We barely touched the surface of a topic that needs A LOT more discussion.
If we are using homogeneous judging methods we are going to end up with a homogeneous group; which we know is not ideal.
How might others best recognize your skills and abilities without using degrees, certificates or tests?

How much would you have to be paid to consciously sell your health?
Friday Aug 19, 2022
Friday Aug 19, 2022
This is a sharp question. We all know people who focus on work to the detriment of their health. Maybe you have done it yourself.
I had an amazing conversation with Brett A McCall, Estelle Poiré and Douglas MacGray, J.D., C.F.P.(r).
When it comes to a conscious choice, most people will pay money to be healthy.
But unconsciously, we give away our health for work.
If someone came up to you and offered you money for your health - how much would it take for you to say yes?

Is personal development the responsibility of the organization or the individual?
Thursday Aug 18, 2022

"People have no loyalty. Why should I pay to develop them?"
"What if we invest in them and they leave? What if we don't and the stay?"
It has been interesting to talk to various leaders about how they view personal development.
I know one CEO who has a huge training and development budget. It is a point of pride for him to watch employees bloom, even when they take their skills on to endeavors outside his company.
I know another who has no budget for training or development and expects his employees to invest in themselves and is more than happy when his company benefits when they do.
Guess which company has better employee retention.
I wondered what others thought about training and development so I asked Glady Baradaran, Connie Whitman, MBA, and Steve Anglin, MBA.
In the end they all seemed to agree that it was smart for companies to invest in growing their employees.
Do you agree? Why or why not?

It is easy to feel invisible when working remotely.
When I had a boss who worked in a different state, I always groaned when I saw her name come up on my phone. She never called unless I had done something wrong or she wanted to load more work on me.
(Let's not even talk about the time she called to tell me about a team building event. I was ready to write down dates so I could book flights only to have her add, "It's going to be a lot of fun and we need you to take all the emergency calls while we are out.”)
I wondered if anything had changed since my time in corporate so I asked three people with lots of experience being leaders in different settings. Dr Mohan Ananda, Coach M J Tolan, and Bill Hyche had some great insights.
I came away with the understanding that they each believe it is the leader's responsibility to support their employees. Not the employees' responsibility to have to chase down their boss to beg for what they need.
Do you agree with their experience?
(I wonder if my old boss will somehow see this.)

How do you embrace and accept unexpected change?
Tuesday Aug 16, 2022

When life takes a left turn and veers away from where you thought you were heading, there can be a sense of loss, frustration, disappointment and even anger.
Working through that can be hard and defeating. I asked Gary Fredericks, Christopher Hakim and Ursula Manvatkar DipM MCIM how they accept and embrace new realities.
Do you have any tips that have helped you let go of one plan and happily take on another?

When people look up to you it is easy to unintentionally influence decisions even when you aren't the expert in the room.
As the saying goes, "Hire experts and then get out of their way."
But just sharing your opinion can be in the way, swaying the conversation and the decision.
Dr. Laura Dowling, Beth Hill Poulin, John Mollison and I got to have a really interesting conversation about it and another idea came up at the end - how do you keep teams from gravitating to the mediocre middle ground?
Look for that Quick Hits in the near future.
Have you ever been on a team that was overly influenced by the leader to the detriment of the outcome? What could have been done differently to prevent that problem?

How do you say no when you feel obligated to say yes?
Friday Aug 12, 2022
Friday Aug 12, 2022
Obligation is a funny thing. If someone never feels obligated to anything, what does that say about their emotional connection to other humans? (That might be a different Quick Hits conversation.)
For most of us we do things out of obligation every day. Commitments we have made to ourselves or other people or (more often it feels) expectations others have put on us.
I asked Alexi Bracey and Dr Cole Galloway about strategies they use to say no.One thing I didn't get a chance to ask is, what about the guilt? When you feel obligated to say yes and you don't there is often guilt. (Yet another conversation.)
How do you say no when you feel like you "should" say yes?

What makes a debate healthy or unhealthy?
Thursday Aug 11, 2022
Thursday Aug 11, 2022
Conversations where disagreements can unfold and exploring the other side of an idea are useful, healthy and in great need these days.
But it seems that humans are more likely to stand squalling at each other and calling names.
How would you know if you are in a conversation where there is learning to be had and what do you do when you realize a "debate" is heading down hill?
I got to have a fun conversation with three impressive individuals: Michael Sicuranza CFP®, AEP®, Jaclyn Zoccoli and Michael Vincent who were open, honest and thoughtful about how to get the most out of a disagreement.
Are you someone who enjoys a debate or do you avoid them as useless arguing? We would love to see your thoughts in the comments.

Is it fraud to have two, full-time, remote jobs?
Wednesday Aug 10, 2022
Wednesday Aug 10, 2022
I read an article recently about someone who had two, full-time, remote jobs. His argument was that he was paid to manage and deliver ideas - cognitive work - and that both employers were happy with his output.
My first thought was, "What does his LinkedIn profile say?" But the article didn't use his real name (not surprising) so I couldn't check.
Then I wondered about benefits. How does that work?
But eventually my brain got to fraud.
I asked a CEO colleague and he went straight to the point, "If you have to hide it, you know it's wrong." Harsh? Maybe. But true.
This panel consists of people who work for themselves, people who have people working for them and people who have a job and a side hustle, people in the US, the UK and in Spain.
I noticed during the conversation the that opinion was different about having two JOBS than it was about having a job and building your own thing (business/hustle) on the side.
That is interesting use of language. "On the side."
Doing your own thing is considered in addition to a full-time job. But having two employers, even in different time zones seemed to be frowned upon.
Take a listen and then let us know in the comments what you think. If you can make it work and everyone is "happy" is having two full-time jobs wrong? Does it matter if they know about each other or not? If you hired someone to work full-time for you and found out they had another full-time job, what would you do?
Huge thanks to Emily Rentas, LMHC, Brandon Mahoney, Kevin Wash and Simon Coles for being willing to have a conversation that doesn't have a "right" answer but feels like it should. (Unless there is wording in your contract. Then there is a right answer.)
