Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

How do you have empathy without allowing yourself to be manipulated?
Tuesday Jul 12, 2022
Tuesday Jul 12, 2022
When I was a little girl I was often taken advantage of because I was taught to "share" and not be "selfish" to the point that I would allow other children to all but steal from me repeatedly. We were quite poor I would often have to go without because my parents couldn't replace something I had "given" away.
As a teenager is got a little better. But I was still made a fool of by people who abused my kindness.
As an adult, I will still give the benefit of the doubt - once. But I am quick to believe people when they show me who they really are.
I wondered how other people balance being empathic and kind with also being street smart and not allowing themselves to be manipulated to their detriment.
Fortunately, Kevin Wash, Emma Humphrey and Wayne Buckhanan, PhD were happy to have an interesting conversation and share their experience.
When does empathy become a problem? How does that balance work for you? Share with us in the comments.

Is self-esteem possible without comparing yourself to others?
Monday Jul 11, 2022
Monday Jul 11, 2022
I want the answer to this question to be "yes." But I can't wrap my brain around how self-esteem is possible in a vacuum.
Fortunately I was able to have a conversation about it with three women doing amazing things in the world, Heather Villa, PMP, Sarah Martin and Keji Moses.
Be a fly on the wall for our discussion and then let us know, do you think self-esteem is based on comparison or is there a way for that not to be a factor?

How do you apply ”Life is too short” to your life?
Friday Jul 08, 2022
Friday Jul 08, 2022
We recorded this conversation before the recent events that cut the lives of way too many people short.
At first I thought I might not post it. Too raw and might be seen as grabbing for attention on the tails of a horrible situation.
As I thought more about it I realized that it doesn't honor anyone to stop living. And so, with the deepest respect to those who never had a chance to answer this question, I ask, "How do you apply, Life is too short, to your life?"
Thank you to Alexis Scott, George Rotsch and Stewart Wiggins for having this conversation with me.

When does venting become toxic?
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
Thursday Jul 07, 2022
In this conversation with Atif Agha, Ursula Manvatkar and James H. Lee we realized there is not a hard and fast line but there really is a point where enough is enough.
Who do you think is responsible to noticing the line has been crossed? As a facilitator and a coach it is my responsibility to point it out. If that isn't your role, do you just listen until the complaining stops?
Let us know in the comments.

What makes something selfish?
Wednesday Jul 06, 2022
Wednesday Jul 06, 2022
"You're selfish" is usually thrown out as an insult when you aren't doing something someone else wants you to do. They believe you have it in your means and they deserve it. OR that you are taking more than your share.
But what is the truth? Who gets to decide if something is selfish?
After we had this conversation I saw a post (forgive me I don't remember where) that said selfish is taking three pieces of pizza because you are afraid there won't be enough. Kindness is taking one for the same reason.
Thank you to Danica Virginia Meredith, Stewart Wiggins and Coach M J Tolan for having this conversation with me.

How do you respond when someone says, ”You’re not listening to me?”
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
The easy reply is, "Yes I am." or to parrot back what they just said. But listening isn't about being able to regurgitate information (regardless of what they teach us to do in school). Listening is about action being taken.
When an adult says, "You're not listening" to a child, it means, "You're not doing what I'm telling you to do." Does it mean something different when adults say it to each other?
Dr. Laura Dowling, James Blair, Estelle ♻️ Poiré and I got to have a conversation with an international take on the topic. They made some really great points.

What does it mean to be a thought leader?
Monday Jul 04, 2022
Monday Jul 04, 2022
It is a term that gets tossed around. "Thought leader" Tycoons, executives, business owners, outspoken or just loud individuals, prolific tweeters - they might all be labeled thought leaders.
What about the Nobel Prize winners who discover something amazing in a lab? Are they thought leaders?
Dare I say that the person who has lots of money and a huge social following who only puts out ideas they have paid other people to come up with isn't a thought leader?
Can you give yourself the label or does it have to be bestowed upon you by - - the masses? Someone with authority?
I invited Atif Agha, Sara Oblak Speicher, and Chuck Groot to discuss what makes someone a thought leader. I'm not sure we came up with a definitive answer.
What do you think?

How do you ask for help?
Friday Jul 01, 2022
Friday Jul 01, 2022
Asking for help might be one of the hardest things we have to do as humans. The vulnerability of saying, "I can't do this myself" is hard.
And when we do ask, we hope the other person is going to be kind, even if they can't help us. That isn't always the case; which teaches us to be even more cautious about asking.
I had the opportunity to ask Megan Galloway, Melissa Mueller-Douglas, and Simon Coles to help me think through this topic. They shared some great insights.
How do you realize you need help and then how do you go about asking for it?

What is the opposite of fear?
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
Thursday Jun 30, 2022
Some fear you have to work through to get to the other side. Some fear is your subconscious brain trying to keep you from doing something dumb.
Courage or bravery speak to having fear and doing it anyway.
Not having fear when you should is dangerous, even deadly.
What is the opposite of fear? Do we have a way to even speak about that idea?
Gabby Lubin, Ian Hendry and Greg Burton were fearless enough to dig into this abstract and difficult conversation with me. I think they made some really good points.

How do you know if you’re living a fulfilled life?
Wednesday Jun 29, 2022
Wednesday Jun 29, 2022
This is such a personal and yet fundamentally human question. If we are always looking forward, for the next thing, we can end up at our grave feeling unfulfilled, like we didn't do the things we should have.
What does it look like to notice that you have a fulfilled life? I was fortunate to get to have this conversation with Keji Moses, Brandon Mahoney and Jodi Barrett. Each has a very different life journey from mine and what they consider "fulfilled" is also different.
What an interesting conversation we created!
What is your answer? What does a fulfilled life looks like for you?
