Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

How do you admit you are wrong?
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
Do you just rip it off like a band-aid? Maybe dance around it? Maybe you're the type of person who other people say never admits they are wrong (side note - it is interesting that people who never admit they are wrong are also unlikely to admit it).
Michael May, Andrew Baharlias and Cole Galloway were kind enough to join me to talk about how they admit when they have been wrong.
It is harder to do than I wish it was. And even when you do, sometimes it's not enough to repair the situation.
How do you admit you were wrong? Equally as interesting, how do you want someone to admit they were wrong to you?

Do people know they are frauds?
Monday Jun 27, 2022
Monday Jun 27, 2022
Do people who promise greatness and deliver nonsense know they are frauds or do they believe they are doing good work?
In coaching, marketing and PR big promises and near zero delivery are more common place than not. It also happens in the trades; construction, plumbing/heating/HVAC, car maintenance and even in finance and wedding planning.
The question I am too often asked is, "How do I choose someone honest who can and will do what they say?" That is a conversation for a different Quick Hits.
Today I wondered about whether people realize they are lying, selling a bill of goods they can't deliver, or if they naively believe they doing right by their customers.
Daniel T Gramkee, Wayne Buckhanan, PhD and Dr. Bob Choat weighed in with their perspectives from different industries.
/Dr Robyn Rant:
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I also think people need to take honest stock in what they are offering and what their clients say the results are. I am SO tired of hearing coaches blame the client (they didn't do the work). That might be true on rare occasions. For the most part, if someone is putting down money to work with you, they want to do the work. It's your job to help them make it happen. /end rant
What do you think? Do people know they are stealing when they claim they can do something they can't?

Having self-control vs being authentic
Friday Jun 24, 2022
Friday Jun 24, 2022
"I'm just being authentic" has been used as an excuse for all kinds of bad behavior. It was mentioned in the comment section of another conversation that toddlers are given timeouts for being "authentic" and taught to "use their words" when they need something.
So where is the line for adults? When are we too controlled, too tightly regulating what we thing/feel and when are we being over the top and using authenticity as an excuse? Who gets to decide?
There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast answer but Jim Shulman (he/him), Sara Oblak Speicher, MBA and Jeff Mangum were willing to have a conversation with me to try to sort it out.
What do you think? Where is the line between expressing yourself and being overly dramatic?

What does ”You’re not listening to me” actually mean?
Thursday Jun 23, 2022
Thursday Jun 23, 2022
This is SUCH an interesting topic. Those words can mean SO many different things. And I need to do another conversation about how you respond when someone says it to you.
I am forever grateful to Jennifer Pointer, Ric Bachrach and Bill Dolan for having this conversation with me. We could have easily continued to unpick this topic for an hour.

Can you be a workaholic if you love your work?
Wednesday Jun 22, 2022
Wednesday Jun 22, 2022
In the entrepreneur world you hear it pretty often, "I don't mind working (insert insane hours) because I love what I do!" I started to wonder what being a "workaholic" really meant.
Hiding in work to avoid an unhappy home life or having to deal with personal demons - yes, that's likely.
But what if you're not "hiding" from something? You could still be neglecting other parts of your life (pretty likely).
I decided to ask Domenico Ciarallo (serial entrepreneur) and Erica Breuer (also an entrepreneur) what they thought.
Do you think being a workaholic is related to whether or not you enjoy your work?

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?
Tuesday Jun 21, 2022
Tuesday Jun 21, 2022
The further you get in your career the less the answers are clearly right or wrong. As Simon Coles pointed out in our conversation, if there was a clear answer, someone would have made it rather than bringing it to him.
Dawn Bell, Steve Anglin, Simon and I got to talk about how we approach decisions when we don't know what to do.
I would recommend you add this question to any discussion with senior leadership. The resulting conversation will be robust.

How do you show up at your best?
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Have you ever really thought about your process for being "on your game?" Athletes have rituals they go through. So do professional speakers.
I wondered how other business professionals make sure they show up at their best and Tracy Martin, Stewart Wiggins and Lauren Schieffer, CSP were kind enough to share their expertise and experience with me.
Also of note - Lauren had wanted to go back and talk more about the word "armor." After we turned off the recording we discussed the idea that she didn't mean it as a way to hide or not be authentic (as I interpreted it). But rather as in being ready to perform.
How do you make sure you show up at your best every time?

How do you wrap up a meeting with someone chatty?
Friday Jun 17, 2022
Friday Jun 17, 2022
We have all had it happen. You're watching the minutes tick down and the person you're talking to is getting up a head of steam. (Or maybe you are the chatty one. I've been guilty.)
I know I've felt embarrassed when I have felt like I overstayed my welcome. I have also had to cut someone off when I had another meeting to get to.
Helena Bouchez, Dr. Bob Choat and Pascal Derrien had some great ideas they have used successfully.

Are procrastination and laziness the same thing?
Thursday Jun 16, 2022
Thursday Jun 16, 2022
Maybe procrastination is not wanting to do a thing while laziness is not wanting to do anything? It's a question because I don't have a great answer.
Having a conversation with James W Haile Jr, Janice Dru-Bennett and Bill Lindquist provided even more for me to think about.
Is it lazy or procrastination to de-prioritize something? It could be neither. I could be good self-care.
Where do you draw the line between procrastination and laziness?

How is working with a high achiever different?
Wednesday Jun 15, 2022
Wednesday Jun 15, 2022
To answer this question you have to define what a "high achiever" actually is. I'm not sure we did a great job of that in this conversation. Is it someone who wants to do more or who has done more than "average"? (I'm not exactly sure what average means in this case either.)
But despite that, Sara Oblak Speicher, Stephanie Byrwa and Stephanie Wasylyk bravely stepped into this conversation with me.
It seems that high achievers are really hard on themselves, they may not see themselves as doing enough (productivity dysmorphia) and they can take correction quite hard.
Whether you consider yourself a high achiever or not, we would love to hear how you think working with them or for them is different.
