Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

What is the difference between venting and complaining?
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Talking through something to get it out of your head can be a good idea. But taking negativity and dumping it into someone else's head by talking about it isn't ideal.
What is the difference? Where is the line? Is it about how it is perceived by the other person?
Kashaun Parker, Christopher Jerjian and Charlie Janes made time in their day to have this conversation with me. It's harder to define than you might think.

How are organizations failing at diversity and what can they do about it?
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Is diversity only how people look? Surly there is more to it than that but looks is how we judge it. Is this panel diverse enough to even be having this conversation? By looks alone you would likely say no. If you knew more about the panelists, you might think otherwise.
Rick Alcantara. suggested this topic and as scheduling would have it Dawn Bell and Ed Samuel were available to be part of the conversation.
As always, we would love to hear your thoughts on this difficult but important conversation.

How do you catch yourself making assumptions?
Friday Jun 10, 2022
Friday Jun 10, 2022
Assumptions are a necessary part of life. You assume your office chair is going to support your weight. We assume the letter we mailed will get where we sent it (eventually). We assume people will do the things they said they will do.
But some assumptions are lazy and unhelpful or even hurtful. I asked Karen Loomis, Christopher Hakim and Mohan Ananda how they notice and address assumptions we might not even realize we are making.
How do you realize you are making an assumption and does noticing it change anything?

Where is the line between having ambition and working yourself into an early grave?
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Is it impossible to be a workaholic if you enjoy your work? What about the other people in your life who have to put up with your workaholic-ness?
If you want to stop and smell the roses every day do you lack ambition?
Fortunately Emily Rentas, Michael Davis and Kevin Wash were kind enough to dive into this conversation with me and share their thoughts on a subject that could easily create a long and thought provoking conversation.
We would love to hear what you think about ambition in the comments.

Why do we feel guilty about making ourselves a priority?
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
Somewhere there is a balance between being a martyr that takes on doing everything at the expense of our mental and physical health and being selfish, narcissistic and not caring about others.
Where exactly that line is, is hard to say. I asked Estelle Poiré, Glady Baradaran and Craig Leonard why putting ourselves first (not even at the expense of others) often has so much guilt attached to it.
Where do you think the line is and what are your thoughts about the guilt?

What makes something disrespectful?
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
This is WAY harder to define than you might think. Is disrespect intent or perception? Who gets to decide? It seems that the person with the most power gets to say what is or isn't disrespectful.
This conversation isn't any easier in team and leader development workshops. Disrespect is something we all think we "know" when we see it but putting a hard line definition on it is almost impossible. Hence the need to have the conversation.
Thank you to Beth Hill Poulin, Wayne Buckhanan, PhD and Doug Crowe for spending ten minutes trying to get to a reasonable answer.

What makes something bragging?
Monday Jun 06, 2022
Monday Jun 06, 2022
This conversation started in the comments section on LinkedIn with John Mollison. He told me that a decorated war veteran said, "It ain't braggin' if you've done it."
It seems to me that the more accomplished I become the more it sounds like bragging when I talk about it.
Michael Sicuranza and James H. Lee joined in for an amazing conversation about accomplishment, bragging and at the very end we touched on if there is a gender difference.
We would love to hear what you think. What makes something bragging?

Most people will tell you they still have more to do in life. Things they want to accomplish, potential they have yet to reach.
But, constant striving, always looking at the next thing you haven't yet achieved is a recipe for unhappiness and stress.
I was fortunate to have Cami Travis-Groves, Cyrus McCall and Simon Coles join me for this particular conversation. What an amazing set of human beings living their best lives!

I never learned to golf because you can't learn in private. I didn't want to look like a foolish beginner.
The other side of the coin is getting stuck in mediocrity. Starting but then not pushing yourself into the uncomfortable place where growth happens and where you might fail.
Lauren Schieffer, CSP, Ian Hendry and Coach M J Tolan were kind enough to explore this topic with me and talk about how they benefit from having a #GrowthMindset.
How do you get started and move through the awkward beginner stage of things?

Where is your lane and how do you stay in it?
Wednesday Jun 01, 2022
Wednesday Jun 01, 2022
Yet another conversation where the question I thought I was asking wasn't the question I got answers to. For me, "staying in your lane" means doing the things you are good at and qualified to do and letting other people do the things they are good at and qualified to do.
JC Glick, LTC (R), U.S. Army, MA started the conversation off by talking about how having "lanes" creates hierarchy where "leaders" won't do jobs that they consider "below" them.
Seema Desai, DDS, CPC, ACC, ELI-MP, CPDS added that as a dentist, sweeping the floor was sometimes interpreted as her silently rebuking someone for not doing their job (she was just doing something that needed to be done).
Greg Burton shared a real-time event from his business about a problem with his website and how glad he was that figuring out the code was not his lane and he was happy to let others take care of it.
What a rich and different conversation than I thought we would have.
What comes up for you when someone says, "stay in your lane?"
