Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

Is it better to improve weaknesses or maximize your strengths?
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
This is a tricky question. Weaknesses left unchecked might trip you up and it is silly to ignore the success that can come from leaning into the things you do well.
I asked Stewart Wiggins and Glady Baradaran, with a shout out to Jesse Carrie whose internet was not playing nice, how they balanced strengths/weaknesses and what they looked for when working with others.

Would you rather work with a brilliant generalist or an expert in their field? Why?
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
This is an absolutely amazing conversation. George Rotsch, Francisco "Frank" Galindo, and Dr. Bob Choat brought some really great insight into where, why and how they hire brilliant generalists and where, why and how they choose to bring in an expert.
The world of work isn't just "changing" it has CHANGED! Regardless of if you are a generalist or an expert or if you are looking to build success around them, this conversation is worth ten minutes of your time.

How do you know when you’ve learned from a mistake and you can let it go?
Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
Tuesday Mar 08, 2022
Sometimes I get bored talking about and learning from my mistakes. It seems like, no it IS, a never ending process. It would be nice if you got to a certain point in life and it was like, "Okay, you've made all the mistakes for one lifetime. You've learned all the lessons. It's easy coasting from here."
That isn't how it works. There are ALWAYS more mistakes to make. Someone's feelings to hurt by accident. Stuff you wish you had known sooner.
Mohan Ananda, Sara Oblak Speicher, and Brigitte Skeene took some time to chat with me about learning from mistakes without dwelling on them.
What is a mistake you made that others could learn from so they can make different ones?

When do you know enough to teach?
Monday Mar 07, 2022
Monday Mar 07, 2022
Another interesting question came out in this discussion - when are you obligated to teach? We also talked about getting over Imposter Syndrome because there are people who need what you know.
Listen in as Connie Whitman, Tom English, James H. Lee and I talk through when it's time to realized you are ready to be a teacher, even if you are still a student.

Identify and address absentee leadership
Friday Mar 04, 2022
Friday Mar 04, 2022
Once again we have a question that I thought was straightforward. I assumed (wrongly) that we would discuss things like communication and various leadership styles.
Instead this was one of the most challenging Quick Hits I have facilitated and edited to date.
Listen in as Simon Coles, Tim Hawkes, Deidré Wallace and I grapple with this topic from our varied points of view. Then let us know, what you think about absentee leadership.

How do you seek out information that might change your mind?
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Living in a silo of beliefs isn't a good idea. But it is easy to get into the rut of, "I already know the right answer." There are articles about how critical thinking is dead and people "suffering" from the Dunning-Kruger effect (knowing just enough to get yourself in trouble and not enough to get out of it).
I asked Jonathan Gaev, Helena Bouchez and Eric James Smith how they navigated through keeping an open mind and seeking the truth without having to rehash everything every morning.
The conversation is honest and real. I am thankful for having had it.
What about you? How do you make sure you don't end up discounting new information because you think you already know the answer?

What makes someone a good person?
Wednesday Mar 02, 2022
Wednesday Mar 02, 2022
This conversation was more challenging than I expected. Does being a "good person" depend on the circumstances? Can you do a bad thing for a good reason? Can you have done bad things and still be a good person? Does everyone think they are a good person?
The nuances and thought experiment went deep in this conversation with Gary Fredericks, Dr Cole Galloway and Dr. Bob Choat.
What do you think makes someone a good person? We would love to have your input in the challenging conversation.

How do you be professionally angry?
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
Tuesday Mar 01, 2022
When I worked in corporate I was on a call with a guy who was furious, screaming, cussing and threatening to fire everyone. The interesting thing, I was the only person on the call he had the authority to fire and I was there as part of the solution.
Obviously that isn't a great way to handle anger at work.
For better options, I asked Dinette Rivera, Greg Gurev and Domenico Ciarallo to share their experiences with managing anger in a professional way. I found the conversation insightful and thought provoking.
Do you have a story about anger being managed well or poorly in a professional setting? We would love to hear it.

This conversation is ironic. Do you notice why?
Ideally, business relationships are balanced. You do the work you are paid for and you are paid for the work you do. That isn't always the case.
I asked Gordon DelGiorno and Rick Alcantara what they do about unbalanced relationships. Listen in and then let us know, do you agree or disagree? How have you handled similar situations?

How to be easy to work with without being a pushover.
Friday Feb 25, 2022
Friday Feb 25, 2022
This conversation was much harder than I expected it to be. I thought surely there were some tips beyond "be kind and have boundaries." Over the course of this conversation I realized that finding that sweet spot of being available and willing to support your clients/customers/coworkers while also not being a doormat is tough.
Listen in as Matthew Douthit, Franne McNeal, Edward Fronczkowski and I talk through what it means to be "easy to work with" and if that is always the best choice.
We would love to hear what you think and how you manage this balance.
