Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

How do you identify fear?
Saturday Aug 28, 2021
Saturday Aug 28, 2021
Emotions are such weird things. How do we know if what we are feeling is fear or frustration or anger or...? If you can't identify it there is no way to understand it and you certainly can't explain it to someone else.
Wayne Buckhanan, Marie Wright, Karina Hulstrom and I spent ten minutes trying to untangle the nuances of fear, how to recognize it and then what to do with it.

Why do humans have a love/hate relationship with change?
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
Why do we want things to be different and also dislike change?
You have likely seen the comic where everyone raises their hand when ask if they want things to be different but no one does when asked if they want to change.
When I first proposed this topic a couple of people said the answer was straightforward and it wouldn't take us ten minutes to explain it. Turns out the conversation was much more dynamic and nuanced than it might appear at first glance.
Listen in as Marie Wright, Karina Hulstrom, Wayne Buckhanan and I talk about science, psychology, evolution and why humans have such a love/hate relationship with change.

Why would you want to manage up?
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
Wednesday Aug 25, 2021
This conversation stemmed from a comment on the Quick Hits conversation about How to manage up (https://youtu.be/-Xb2csvxNuo). Is managing up really something that needs to be done? Is it insulting?
Listen in as Elizabeth Jeffers, Steve Thomson, Tim Hawkes and I discuss when managing upwards might be useful.

Gratitude is a huge part of life-satisfaction and fulfillment. But how often do you notice things to be thankful for? Is there a way to make yourself pay closer attention? Listen in as Sara Oblak Speicher, Steve Thomson and I discuss thankfulness, gratitude and how we make time to notice.

How to protect yourself from an energy vampire

Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
There are people in the world who feel like they are sucking the life right out of you when you are with them. If you have some sort of obligation to them (like family), it can feel like you can't just cut them out of your life.
So what can you do? I asked Karina, Rowley and Wayne exactly that. Do you agree with our ideas?

Is empathy a positive or negative for leaders?
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
It sometimes feels like empathy and capitalism are in direct competition with each other. Can a leader put employees first and still be successful or is there a financial cost to empathy?
I posed this question to Sara, Catherine and Jim. Listen in to learn what they thought and then form your own opinion.

How to deal with someone to consistently complains
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
You know the person. The one you never ask how they are doing because you know the answer is going to be a list of complaints. I asked Karina Holstrom, Rowley Maggs and Wayne Buckhanan how they deal with people like that. Listen in as they share stories and ideas.

What leaders can do to create an environment of inclusion
Wednesday Aug 18, 2021
Wednesday Aug 18, 2021
This conversation dove-tailed from the previous one about how to accommodate differently-abled individuals without getting into their private medical business. Simply Summer and Mahna Campbell (Navbalsinder Sandhu) shared their thoughts on how to make inclusion the norm rather than the exception.
Summer asked that I not share her social media info.

Does a business need to know how an employee is differently abled to accommodate them?
Wednesday Aug 18, 2021
Wednesday Aug 18, 2021
This conversation started in the comments section of a closed group on social media where a young woman was sharing the challenges she was running into in trying to get her company to accommodate her. Unfortunately the HR person in her company was dead set that they needed to know and verify the employee's medical diagnosis before they could discuss accommodations.
I posed the question the Simply Summer (who is on the autism spectrum, is an abuse survivor and a a proponent for all differently-abled people) and Mahna Campbell (aka Navbalsinder Sandhu) to get their take on how businesses could accommodate without violating HIPPA.
Summer has asked me not to share her contact info.

Is trying to create happiness from joy addiction?
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
Wednesday Aug 11, 2021
This is a continuation of the conversation about the difference between joy and happiness. If joy is a short-term burst of neurochemicals and happiness is a longer-term contentment in life as we previously suggested, does trying to create happiness using joy lead to an addiction that isn't at all fulfilling?
Listen in as Simon, Steve, Robert and I talk though our thoughts.
