Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

Where does trusting someone become being naive?
Tuesday Oct 04, 2022
Tuesday Oct 04, 2022
After Brittney Wilson and I shared stories about times when we thought we were naive, JC Glick made an interesting point - does being naive mean you don't realize or consider there might be a different answer rather than just accepting a blatantly ridiculous answer because it is easier?
Chason Forehand added that being naive requires trust - the ability to believe someone. I countered that naive may actually not realizing that trust is a thing in a given situation.
This was an amazingly deep conversation and I think there is a lot of nuance there that is still to be uncovered.
What does being naive mean to you and how does it balance with trust?

How do you revoke trust?
Monday Oct 03, 2022
Monday Oct 03, 2022
You trusted someone. Now you don't. Does it happen all at once? Is there a conversation when you realize it?
Chason Forehand and Brittany Wilson, shared that they are careful with who they trust and that people doing what they say they will is really important to them
JC Glick, is on the other side of the spectrum in that he is willing to overlook situations and believe the person is perhaps trustworthy in other situations.
I'm somewhat in the middle. I'm pretty trusting upfront, but if you show me you aren't trustworthy, I'm quick to make note of it and remember.
What about you? How do you handle it when someone breaks your trust?

What causes imbalance in relationships?
Friday Sep 30, 2022
Friday Sep 30, 2022
I was very interested in what this all-male panel would have to say about imbalance in relationships and they did not disappoint.
Could it be as Michael Sicuranza commented that some imbalance is to be expected and might not be a bad thing? Or is there something to Kevin Wash and Yonason Goldson's point that there is never a situation where imbalance is a good thing?
And as James Haile pointed out, the personal growth that comes from being on different life path, traveling more or working in a large corporate environment, can create imbalance in a personal relationship.
Who is responsible for noticing and re-balancing a relationship? Is that possible? How long does a relationship have to be out of balance for it to be a problem as opposed to the normal ebb and flow of life?
Is "balance" something you try to create in your relationships? How does it work?

How is the story you’re telling yourself impacting you?
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
This topic came up in the conversation after we turned off the recording and we decided to turn the recording back on and go again.
The voice in our head and the stories we make up are how we define ourselves. And yet, many of us don't even notice the running commentary.
Michael Davis, Karen Loomis, Daisy Cedeño MS, Dr Cole Galloway and I talked about the effect of our own internal stories as well as what we see professionally.
How do you think the story you tell yourself affects you?

Where is the balance between giving someone an ”out” and holding them accountable?
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
Creating accountability can be awkward and it's sometimes easier to just say "oh it didn't work out." But letting people take advantage of you isn't okay either.
How do you decide when to put your foot down? My experience is that most people wait too long.
Stewart Wiggins, Rick Alcantara, M.A. and Dr. Rhonda Bompensa-Zimmerman joined me for this challenging conversation.
Do you agree with our conclusions?

How are communication skills and interpersonal skills related?
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
It seems like the two skills should go together. The ability to understand and interact with others effectively must include the ability to relay understanding, knowledge and ideas through communication... right?
And being "good" at communication (ie getting your point across) but clueless about how you are affecting others would be deemed "bad communication."
Which then made me wonder why we teach "communication skills" when in reality what is likely needed is interpersonal skills.
Fortunately, Daisy Cedeño MS, Karen Loomis, Michael Davis and Dr. Cole Galloway joined me to explore where communication and interpersonal skills meet or diverge.
What do you think? Can you have one without the other and if so, what might be the result?

What does it mean to have a good relationship with a client?
Monday Sep 26, 2022
Monday Sep 26, 2022
The easiest answer is they pay on time and everyone's happy. But there is so much more to the client/vendor relationship.
Feeling like you are delivering the value you are being paid for, not more, not less, is part of the equation. So is good communication (that seems to come up everywhere and is such a vague topic).
There is also something about just jiving with them (that's even more vague than communication).
Fortunately, Antonio J Correia-Sampaio MSc., Royce King CEO, and Christopher Jerjian had some useful ideas about what it means to have a good relationship with a client and how to create it.

What is the difference between empathy and compassion?
Friday Sep 23, 2022
Friday Sep 23, 2022
These two words are often used interchangeably. But they are actually different things.
Is it possible to have one without the other or do they go hand-in-hand?Dr. Hannah Hartwell, Suki Jeffreys, Jim Shulman and Michael May joined me for this quick venture into how language is used and it is a great example of why what you think you said might not be what the other person actually heard.
For me, empathy is feeling how someone else feels. Compassion is caring about it. I think you can have compassion without empathy and now, after thinking about it more, I think it might also be possible to have empathy without compassion.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with me? Are compassion and empathy the same thing?

When does ”under promise, over deliver” become under charging for great service?
Thursday Sep 22, 2022
Thursday Sep 22, 2022
This question came up in a conversation with a client. How do those of us who actually provide a highly niche and valuable service set ourselves apart from those who have the bravado to say a big number and provide (how do I say this nicely) nonsense?
In the coaches coaching coaches to coach coaches world (yes, sadly that is a thing) they preach that you should put a huge price tag on your services just to show they are valuable, regardless of how useful they actually are.
There is also the idea that if you give away or charge very little for great service, people will see the value and want to pay for more of it.However, does giving amazing service at a bargain price simply set the bar low for the value you offer?
This was an interesting conversation with Helena Bouchez, Kerry Barrett, and Melissa Deally. As you will hear, the panelists have different approaches.
What do you think? How do charge a fair price and set yourself apart from the noise?

How do you notice when someone is lonely?
Wednesday Sep 21, 2022
Wednesday Sep 21, 2022
You might be surprised how many people are lonely. And it's not just who you might expect. I have clients who spend all day, every day talking to people and yet they feel disconnected and alone.
Because of the type of work that I do, I tend to pick up on loneliness, even in casual conversations. When I've done #Happy2Listen there is an acute since of loneliness in those who choose to chat with me.
Annette Richmond, Karen Loomis and Stewart Wiggins took some time out of their day to talk with me about how they notice loneliness and what might be done about it.
Maybe it’s about connection. What are your thoughts on being lonely, how might you notice in others and what action might you take?
