Quick Hits are 10-minute conversations designed to exercise your brain by letting you listen in on an unscripted conversation to hear other people‘s thoughts on a variety of subjects. In February of 2021 I and the members of my mastermind group thought other people might enjoy listening in on some of the lively conversations we were having. But we realized that no one was going spend 90-minutes listening to us going on about anything and sometimes nothing. Instead, we decided to pick one topic and have a short conversation to share. I took the reigns because facilitating those types of conversations sounded like fun. Over the course of a few months it grew from just members of our mastermind group to four (sometimes three if schedules go sideways) people from various parts of the world and from ”short” to exactly 10-minutes. Thus was born ”Quick Hits” hosted by me, Dr Robyn. I hope to get caught up with posting them here on PodBean at some point. As of this writing, I have over 100 ”episodes.” If you‘d like to see the videos of these conversations, they are available on my YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/DrRobynQuickHits If you have a topic you‘d like to hear discussed, I encouraged you to use the contact page of my website: https://drrobynodegaard.com/ to let me know.

How do you overcome procrastination?
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Perhaps the hardest thing about procrastination is noticing when you're doing it. It is so easy to find other things that are perfectly useful to do (vacuuming is my go to) but aren't the priority.
I asked Heather Villa, Jennifer Pointer and Dr. Bob Choat how they notice and manage procrastination. The bottom line, procrastination is easy. Not doing it takes setting yourself up for success and then sticking to it. And if that were easy procrastination wouldn't be a thing.

How do you jump start yourself when you’re stuck?
Monday May 30, 2022
Monday May 30, 2022
You realize you are spinning your wheels and not making progress. Or maybe you don't notice and someone else has to point it out to you.
Now you have to figure out how to get yourself out of the rut and back on track.
Royce Gomez-King, Don Oblazney and Jonathan Gaev had some great ideas for getting unstuck and for noticing when you are. I also shared my 3x rule about tasks getting moved from list to list but not getting done.

How do you get over being disappointed?
Friday May 27, 2022
Friday May 27, 2022
My dad used to tell me that I should never expect anything because then I wouldn't be disappointed. I think that is a horrible way to through life. Optimism is one of the things that bring joy to life and with that comes expectations (But that is a topic for a different conversation).
Disappointment is also part of life. We have to figure out how to deal with the emotions and move on. Anita Toth, Walker McKay and Keji Moses were kind enough to share some of their disappointments and how they have moved on from them.
There is so much packed into this short conversation.
We would love to know, how do you pick yourself up after a disappointment?

Who gets to decide if you are reaching your potential?
Thursday May 26, 2022
Thursday May 26, 2022
If potential is something untapped or unused, who says if you have to use it or in what way it should be used? Is it really possible to "waste" potential?
Clearly I have lots of questions about potential. Fortunately Deborah Ager, Dominic Vogel and Daniel Anton were willing to share their thoughts and personal stories.
What do you think? Can potential be wasted?

What is a collaboration?
Wednesday May 25, 2022
Wednesday May 25, 2022
The word "collab" gets thrown around a lot (at least in the coaching world) and I have seen "influencers" take advantage of people's dreams by suggesting them.
But collaboration is also a great way to make something better than the sum of the parts.
Atif Agha, Stewart Wiggins and Matthew Percia shared their insights into what a collaboration actually is, tips for making them work well and what to look out for when they are going badly.
Do you think #collaboration has the same dark underbelly in other industries as I have seen in coaching?

What is the difference between being polished and being slick?
Tuesday May 24, 2022
Tuesday May 24, 2022
Being polished is good. Being slick is slimy. At least the way the words are used in the English language. But why? What are the nuances that would tell you if someone was slick or polished?
This topic came from a Patrick McGowan post on LinkedIn about putting your best self forward in the video first world. Sara Oblak Speicher, MBA and Bill Hyche joined the conversation.
Patrick shared some of his Grandmother's wisdom: "You always dress for the dignity of the occasion."
Sara pointed out that the Quick Hits about making a bad first impression (https://youtu.be/CwTbzQgbBbM ) is also relevant.
How are slick and polished different in your mind?

Do all disagreements have to be resolved?
Monday May 23, 2022
Monday May 23, 2022
A conversation about disagreements that ended in a disagreement. There is something poetic about that.
Brett A McCall, Philip Tate, Simon Coles and I agreed that disagreements are a healthy and important part of any relationship. But what does it mean for a disagreement to be "resolved?" Does deciding to not discuss certain topics count as resolved? What about just removing someone from your life?
We had an interesting and lively conversation and would love to hear what you think about resolving disagreements.

How do you notice when you’re getting burned out before you get there?
Friday May 20, 2022
Friday May 20, 2022
Then what do you do about it?
The warning signs are subtle, until they aren't. And pulling yourself out of burnout requires energy and motivation you might not have because you are burnt out. By the time someone says, "I'm getting burned out" they usually already are.
I asked Domenico Ciarallo, James W Haile Jr and Gary Fredericks how they know if they are heading towards burnout.
Some of their answers were what you might expect, lack in interest in things they enjoy and not eating has healthy as they know they should.
How do you catch burnout before you end up in the spiral of exhaustion?

What is the difference between being responsive and being innovative?
Thursday May 19, 2022
Thursday May 19, 2022
The simple answer is responsive is giving the market something it is asking for (reactive). Innovative is creating something it doesn't know it wants and then can't live without (proactive).
In this conversation we discovered a third option, creating something that doesn't exist (innovative) that the market is demanding it needs (responsive).
It was a lively conversation with Charlie Janes, Michael Davis and Pascal Derrien. We even got into how companies encourage or squelch innovation. The conversation created the question, How can a leader get the most from introverts? That will be posted tomorrow.

How can leaders get the most out of introverts?
Wednesday May 18, 2022
Wednesday May 18, 2022
This conversation stemmed from our previous discussion about innovation (https://youtu.be/Q1OhIo2d1io) when Michael Davis pointed out that it is easy to lose the contributions of people who are unwilling to "fight" for space in a conversation.
We were fortunate to have Pascal Derrien, a self-identified introvert to share his perspective and Charlie Janes to add his experience from many years of developing and leading teams.
The one huge takeaway - a good facilitator is critical and the leaders themselves are not the ideal person to facilitate.
What do you think? Particularly if you find your ideas get lost in conversations. How can it be done better?
